I'm making the 3 1/2 hour drive tomorrow morning from where I'm going to college all the way up to Killington, Vermont for...
Carnage 27 - Children of the Con!
I'll be playing some (hopefully) awesome games and running a (probably not) awesome Paranoia game! I'm fairly excited, as Carnage has been a mostly good experience in the past, and there are a few games I'm going to play in that I'm super hype about. There are few games that I'm also not. We'll see how it goes.
Anyways, I'm going to list out the games I'm going to play in and the descriptions in this post; then I'll give you guys updates about each one when I've played them!
Okay so:
HEROSCAPE
"THE BATTLE OF ALL TIME Peace is but a dream on the remote planet of Valhalla. The mighty Valkyrie generals lead warring factions into a new age of battle. The Valkyrie summon their hardened heroes and new champions from distant worlds into the fight. Old alliances have fallen and new ones will form. The fate of Valhalla will be won through the flames of war. Join warriors from across time and space they battle in HEROSCAPE: AGE OF ANNIHILATION. Choose your scenario, build your battlefield, select your army, and fight to win!"
I'm a big fan of Heroscape already. Well, big fan is an exaggeration, but I've been playing with the tiles and miniatures since I was a little kid. My mom was a fan, and always wanted me to play Heroscape with the ruleset, but my little brother and I were more content just building landscapes and moving the figures around. I loved the hex pieces and I always tried to make the craziest maps with them! It was only until recently that my little brother and I sat down and learned the rules, and we had a three week hyper phase of building maps and going crazy with the characters. In fact, we played so much that we both felt that we exhausted the possibilities of the heroes we had. We decided to steal my dad's D&D minifigs that were covered in dust and write our own rules for them. I really really like Heroscape, but I do not have a strategic mind. I am totally going to get creamed by these 40 year old war buffs.
Here's a pic of a map I made this past year for Heroscape:
"Welcome gentlemen to the HMS Orpheus, a fifth-rate frigate of the Royal Navy, bound for the West Indies in this the year of our Lord, 1806. Your orders have not been revealed by the Captain, but sailor and officer alike are thrilled to escape the drudgery of blockade duty, and perhaps at last find a chance for action against the frogs. Beyond the usual threats of harsh weather, deprivation, mutiny, and privateers looms something too dark and horrible and name."
Hell. Fucking. Yeah. I love Fearful Ends. Fearful Ends is a horror TTRPG that amazing game designer Paul Seigel created. I was lucky enough to play a test version with some family and family friends and had an amazing time off the bat. Every single time I see Paul running a Fearful Ends game (or any game for that matter) I sign up.
What's so awesome about Fearful Ends for me, aside from the easy to use system and great safety tools, is the "Mental Stress" cards. Throughout the game, as you encounter monstrosities and horrors beyond comprehension, you take cards from a deck that give you prompts on how to roleplay how your character is going further and further to the brink of frothing at the mouth and screaming incoherently. I love these cards, and I love roleplaying freaking out. Fearful Ends does this really well by not cutting corners on how terrors affect your character, but also being sensitive to the symptoms that those with mental illnesses and conditions (like me) struggle with.
I love these cards so much that I have my own deck, and I practice the decline of my sanity every once in awhile for fun.
Anyways I think this game is going to go really well; I've never been disappointed by one of Paul's games.
QUANTUM REALM
I have no idea what to expect for this game in all honesty. Never heard of it. This is the description for it:
"Imagine a game where your entire "ship" can be completely redesigned every turn to meet your current needs. Imagine a game where you become stronger by blasting pieces off an opponents "ship" & attaching them to your own. Imagine a game where the laws of physics do not apply. Welcome to the Quantum Realm!"
I mean I guess it's somewhat self-explanatory. It's another miniatures game, but besides Heroscape (and one TERRIBLE game of Ogre), I haven't played them. I blame my intuition over tactics mind for not being more into mini games, but I generally would be a terrible general as most of my plans consist of the phrase "fuck it, we ball". I'll let you guys know my thoughts on this!
BLOOD FOR MONEY
This one looks really cool guys. Here's the description:
"In the sun-drenched expanse of the New Mexico, the law is as scarce as water and the air hangs heavy with the promise of danger. Amidst this unforgiving landscape, a bride's cry for help echoes through the canyons, carried on winds of desperation. Hardened gunslingers, you are bound by a common purpose: to rescue the kidnapped bride from the clutches of a merciless band of outlaws. With grit in your teeth and steel in your hands, you ride forth into the unknown, driven to right the wrongs of the world and earn a little silver in the process."
And then my fucking FAVORITE line immediately after the description:
"Note: Joker is a home-brew game system using ordinary playing cards. You can bring your favorite deck or borrow one."
BAD PEOPLE DOING CRIMES
This is a Blades in the Dark game. I'm not a fan of Blades in the Dark but everyyyoneeee else is. What am I missing? I'll give it another shot and be a good sport. I'll let you guys know.
~~~~~~~~~~~
No. No. Don't make me talk about my game.
Okay fine. Fuck.
PIPE-FIX DREAMCYCLE
"Un-Congratulations citizen! You've been carefully selected and screened for pre-treason. Please turn yourself into the authorities A.S.A.P! You and your Troubleshooter team will need to deliver one [REDACTED] and install the [REDACTED] in order for your mission to be complete. But citizen, be careful, there could be commie mutant traitors about! Remember, if you see something, what you just saw could be treasonous, so make sure to report yourselves. And keep your laser handy!"
I 100% expect only one to two people will read this post. But if, by some weird reason, you are the only person currently in my game and you are reading this post STOP READING HERE. Let's talk about the many problems of this game.
1. I need at least three players, there is only one signed up.
2. I have no prep for this game.
Actually, there's not many problems, but those two are enough. I have NO prep. None. I stole this Paranoia scenario from my Dad, who asked me to give it a better title than "Pipe Game". Does that look like a better title to you? NO. I am so unprepared and annoyed that I'm running this game. If anything, my Dad bullied me into it. GRR! I should've run my heist game instead. Anyways, I'm so fucked and I'm dreading running this game. Did I mention I have no prep? Not even character sheets? I hope Killington has a printer... somewhere.
Anyways! That's my schedule for Carnage 27. I'm very excited to not be on my college campus for a weekend, and to play some cool games. I'll keep y'all updated on the games go!
Update: That singular person dropped out of my game LOL!
